I'm blogging from Canada so I'm hoping to avoid any confusion about my personal political leanings. I voted Liberal in the October election, but that was a strategic vote. I belong to no political party, nor do I subscribe to any left-right stance. It's simply arrogant to approach a policy issue with pre-conceived notions about more or less government, or more or less anything, and expect the best outcomes every time. Sure, we all have general outlooks on what the role of government should be, but sometimes it's easy to forget that those views should be shaped by the facts on the ground, not the other way around.
Ideology is too rigid for post-modernity. This may sound like a contradiction coming from someone who named his blog Little 'l' Liberal, but I'm reclaiming liberal for people who want to be free from the oppressive restriction imposed by authority. Liberal works as a modifier for just about any word*. Even liberal-conservative makes sense once liberal is understood as a lover and defender of liberty.
